The Cultural Reinvention in Dundee
Dundee is creating a national buzz by reinventing itself, and the University of Dundee is at the very heart of that new identity. Bang in the middle of the city's new 'cultural quarter', the University campus with its amiable chaos of interesting buildings connected by a network of paths and gardens, has become a magnet for good pubs, clubs, and gallery shops in the area (descriptions and pictures of buildings are available on the Campus and City Guide).
The lively theatre Dundee Rep is on the University's doorstep, along with the new £8 million Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre, which includes two screen cinema, art galleries, and Visual Research Centre. A new science centre followed in 2000, as did the Overgate, a £100 million shopping centre, which is less than two minutes walk away.
1997 saw the opening of the University's £14 million School of Life Sciences Biocentre employing more than 250 scientists to research the fundamental causes of diseases such as diabetes and cancer.
