Three presentations will shape the themes:
Case Study 1: Design and Construction of a BREEAM 'Excellent' Office Building.The presentation will outline the design and construction process undertaken to achieve the BREEAM 'Excellent' rated Headquarters for the Hilllcrest Housing Association. The building has received many accolades including a 'Special Mention' in the RIAS Doolan Awards, British Council for Offices Best Corporate Office (Scotland), Dundee Institute of Architects' 'Supreme Award' and the Scottish Design Award for Sustainable Design. The lecture will consider in particular the importance of context,design synergies, the distinction between low carbon and low energy design, materials selection, and comfort and well being. It will also highlight some issues relating to the BREEAM assessment process.

Case Study 2: Design of a 'Zero Carbon' Dwelling House.This case study will present a design proposal for a Code 6 compliant, zero carbon dwelling house designed according to Passive House principles. The presentation aims to introduce the audience to the Code for Sustainable Homes and to the principles governing ultra low energy Passive House design. In so doing it addresses important questions about the cost and value of zero carbon housing.
