Introduction to the Centre

The Centre for Forensic and Legal Medicine is located in the Fleming Gymnasium building on the Main Campus (number 25 on the Campus Map). Enter via Small's Wynd and, opposite the OTI coffee shop, there is a lane with access to the Centre. The Centre on campus houses offices, laboratory facilities and a comprehensive library. The mortuary facility is approximately ten minutes away from the university main campus, adjacent to the police headquarters building.

The Centre is funded directly by the Scottish Crown Office under an agreement with the University which provides forensic autopsy and toxicology services to procurators fiscal in Tayside, Fife and Central regions.  The range of cases investigated includes road traffic fatalities, suicides, accidents at home and at work, homicides and sudden natural deaths, as well as in-hospital deaths under anaesthesia and other unexpected hospital deaths.

The Centre provides undergraduate teaching to the School of Law (optional courses in forensic medicine and in forensic science).
Within the School of Medicine the Centre provides Student Selected Component teaching in both forensic medicine and forensic science. For medical undergraduates there is also an intercalated BMSc option in forensic medicine, which is also open to medical undergraduates from any UK medical school.

A postgraduate one-year taught course leading to a Master of Forensic Medicine degree is available for medical graduates only.  Postgraduate research programmes, mainly in the field of forensic toxicology, provide MSc and PhD opportunities.

The Centre has an active interest in the application of forensic medicine in support of human rights and has teaching, research and international service commitments in this field.
