Introduction to the Department
The Department of Forensic Medicine is located in the Fleming
Gymnasium building on the Main Campus (building number 36 on the
Campus Map). Enter via
Small's Wynd and, opposite the OTI coffee shop, there is a lane to your right
with access to the Department. The department on campus houses offices,
laboratory facilities and a comprehensive library. The mortuary facility approximately ten minutes away
from the university main campus.
The department is funded directly by the Scottish Crown Office under an
agreement with the University which provides forensic autopsy and toxicology
services to procurators fiscal in Tayside, Fife and Central regions. The range
of cases investigated includes road traffic fatalities, suicides, accidents at
home and at work, homicides and sudden natural deaths, as well as in-hospital
deaths under anaesthesia and other unexpected hospital deaths. The department
provides undergraduate teaching to the
Department of Law (optional courses in forensic medicine and in forensic
science) as well as medicine. For medical undergraduates there is an
intercalated BMSc option in forensic medicine, which is also open to medical
undergraduates from any UK medical school. A postgraduate one-year taught
course leading to a
Master of Forensic Medicine degree is available for overseas
medical graduates only. Postgraduate research programmes, mainly in
the field of forensic toxicology, provide MSc and PhD opportunities.
The department has an active interest in the application of forensic
medicine in support of human rights and has teaching, research and
international service commitments in this field.
