If you have pensions benefits in a previous scheme, it may be possible to amalgamate them into your University scheme.
The university schemes are contracted-out of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme (SERPS) and can accept transfers from similar contracted-out salary related schemes as well as from money purchase pension schemes (contracted-in or contracted-out) and from personal pension schemes.
There are detailed regulations in the transfer of both Guaranteed Minimum Pensions and what are known as 'Protected Rights' and you will have to agree in writing before the transfer can be completed.
When a transfer in is accepted, this will be expressed as a period of years and months/days of service in your new University scheme.
