Television History: A Contradiction?

The renowned TV historian, Dan Snow, discusses the strengths and weaknesses of presenting history on television. His talk will highlight what television has to offer as well as some of the pitfalls that threaten the historian. He will also attempt to peer into the future of this rapidly changing field.

Sir John Lister-Kaye is one of Scotland's best-known naturalists and conservationists. He is a Times columnist and the author of seven books on nature and wildlife. His books 'Song of the Rolling Earth', and Nature's Child have all been best sellers. He has lectured on conservation and environmental politics on three continents. Using film and imagery his lecture exploring the impact of the Victorian sporting tradition on the landscape of the Higlands should prove to be fascinating and compelling.

The opportunities, challenges and dilemmas of 'liberal' framework of human embryo research.

Christopher Barratt is a reproductive biologist who works in IVF and is a member of the national authority governing fertilsation and embryo research - the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority. He will highlight the opportunities this field provides and also its challenges, concentrating on what's possible and the ethical frameworks that need to be established to maintain the confidence of the public and scientific community.

The V&A and the role of museums in contemporary society

The Victoria & Albert is one of the world's leading museums and a champion of excellence in design and applied arts. Using examples such as the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Mark Jones will present a lecture exploring the role of museums and present a compelling case on the importance of museums in acting as a catalyst for economic regeneration. This lecture is particularly timely as the V&A is currently participating in a wide ranging feasibility study to explore how a V&A presence in Dundee might be established.

Dr Jung Chang

Mao: The Unknown Story

Internationally famous as the author of Wild Swans and latterly a critically acclaimed biography of Mao Zedong, Jung Chang will mark international women's day with a lecture exploring the hidden lives and events behind the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Using her own experience, so wonderfully brought to life in Wild Swans, and her 10 years researching the background to Mao Zedong's rule in China, Jung Chang will present a unique lecture on one of the world's most fascinating countries.

Jason Lewis

Expedition 360: A Human Powered Navigation Circumnavigation of the Planet

Expedition 360 has been a 13 year journey that has led Jason Lewis across five continents, two oceans and two seas. Using only human power, he walked, cycled, roller-bladed, kayaked, swam, rowed and pedalled 46,505 miles. Jason Lewis will give a lecture describing his incredible feat as well as outline the objectives of his journey - to promote environmentally friendly travel, world citizenship between cultures and awareness of climate change among young people. Jason worked with the x360 support team to visit 863 schools, involving thousands of students from the 37 countries the expedition travelled through in a variety of programs conducted in conjunction with UNESCO's Associated Schools Program Network.

To commemorate the centenary of Winston Churchill as a Dundee MP the University and the city of Dundee will join forces to host a joint lecture to explore the life and achievements of one of the greatest Britons. Historian and Churchill expert, Andrew Roberts will present a fascinating picture of the sometimes controversial politician and the impact that he made, not just in Dundee, but across the world and why despite remarkable life and achievements he still garners significant criticism.
