about dundee

‘Watch out for three-minute delays on the way into town this morning…’ So went a legendary local traffic report. True or not , Dundee’s a small city with big city assets. Friendly and compact, it’s also culturally and economically vibrant.

Dundee City Centre

  • Dundee is one of the most inexpensive cities in the UK for renting or buying property, while Dundonians are rated by lonely planet as ‘among the friendliest, most welcoming and most entertaining people in Scotland.’

  • The main University campus is in the heart of the city’s cultural quarter. Here there are cinemas, cafes and bars alongside Dundee Rep Theatre, the Scottish Dance Theatre, and the internationally renowned Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre.

  • The city itself rises spectacularly above the Tay estuary, with easy access to huge empty beaches and glorious Highland glens. Edinburgh and Aberdeen are an hour away by car, Glasgow ninety minutes.

  • Dundee is a golfer’s paradise. There are 30 golf courses within as many minute’s drive of the city, including major championship courses at both St Andrew’s and Carnoustie.

  • Just over 45 minutes away, with 23 lifts and 38 runs, Glenshee ski centre attracts skiers and snowboarders from all over the UK. The ski area extends over four mountains and three valleys.

  • Dundee Contemporary Arts CentreDundee Contemporary Arts Centre, known as DCA, has won a worldwide reputation for the quality of its exhibitions. An award-winner in the field of education, it is also hugely popular as a social and cultural meeting place.

  • The enormous range of leisure activities within easy range of Dundee include clay pigeon shooting, gliding, parachuting, climbing, diving, mountain biking and rambling. There are also three yacht clubs on the Tay estuary.

  • Dundee Rep is home to Scotland’s only full-time ensemble company. ‘The Dundee experiment shines like a good deed in a naught world,’ said The Daily Telegraph.

  • If there’s a particular buzz about Dundee, it has much to do with the fact that one in seven of its inhabitants are involved in higher education. Local people are hugely supportive of the research we do at the University.

  • Dundee is home to two Scottish Premier League Clubs, Dundee at Dens Park and Dundee United at Tannadice. Dundee also has an excellent ice hockey team and there are also a number of local rugby clubs.
