All new members of staff are allocated a general mentor. However, staff may also choose at any time to request the allocation of a specific Research Mentor. Additionally, staff who are allocated extra Research Time are required to have a Research Mentor.

Some staff may prefer to use informal peer support through research groups and other support groups. However, the School scheme leaves mentees free to seek specialist advice about research from other members of staff, so informal support and the School scheme can easily operate in parallel.
Mentors are expected to devote up to 20 hours per academic year per mentee to this task.
Mentees will be expected to keep and update a research and publication plan, for detailed ongoing discussion with their mentor.
Expressions of interest from new potential mentors and mentees are very welcome. Some staff operate both as a mentor for less experienced staff and as a mentee.
Matching mentors and mentees is not always easy, owing to considerable variation in needs and levels of experience. Once you have expressed your interest, an informal and confidential discussion about current needs and options will follow. A proposed potential matching leads to a meeting between both parties. If both are satisfied they are well matched for this purpose, agreement to the mentoring partnership for the remainder of the academic year ensues. This is then reviewed annually.
