Promoting Social Competence: Effectiveness Survey
Instructions For Users
B MAPPING AND TYPOLOGY
B.1 Introduction
Each item selected for inclusion in the Effectiveness Survey was considered, and the most important elements of its content summarised in a set of descriptive keywords, which were then attached to the item. A consistent overall set of keywords for the whole survey was eventually developed. The only active keywords resident in the items in the Survey are those inserted by the project team.
Then, considering all the items in the survey, all the keywords used were categorised, to help users toward an organised overview or mapping of the whole field of social competence, as reflected in the literature.
Nine categories of general keywords, which describe an item with regard to a particular type of school, curricular objective or research methodology, will be found in section B.2. (below). Seven categories of keywords specifically describing different types of interventions are outlined in the following section B.3. All the actual intervention keywords themselves are listed in section B.4 under their categories. Note that the category headings are not themselves keywords.

"Counselling and Therapeutic" includes interventions adopting a child-centred and humanistic approach, usually delivered by teachers or other professionals.
"Social Skills Training" includes interventions which give pupils instruction to help increase their competence in using specific social skills, usually delivered by teachers.
"Peer Mediated" includes all interventions, regardless of theoretical basis, in which the main mediators and deliverers of the programme are pupils in the peer group themselves, with some teacher co-ordination.
"Cognitive and Self Managed" includes interventions in which pupils have even greater control over the management of the intervention, often on an individual basis, with some teacher co-ordination (e.g. self-management of anger, self-monitoring, self-recording).
"Multiple" includes interventions using a combination or range of the above.
"Miscellaneous" includes interventions not classifiable under any of the above.
B.4 Intervention Keywords by Typology
Keywords available for searching purposes are in bold. In this section, the category headings are themselves also keywords, so they are also in bold.
All Intervention keywords have the prefix INT: to distinguish them from the more general keywords. This prefix must be included when the intervention keywords are used.
Some of the keywords cover a number of programmes or interventions of a particular type or category (e.g. INT:Behaviour Contracts), while others refer to a particular programme which asserts its own special or "brand" name (e.g. INT:CABAS).
