Focus on Social Competence: Report on a Meeting of Expert Witnesses

This report summarises the discussions of a group of over 100 "expert witnesses" from many different educational and child welfare agencies across Scotland, who were invited to the Scottish Office at Victoria Quay in Edinburgh. At different times grouped both within and across professions, the "expert witnesses" debated key issues in the onward promotion of social competence, as well as commenting on drafts of the resources listed below.

Taking A Closer Look At Promoting Social Competence?

(Paper and electronic)

A brief guide to help schools audit/review their approach to promoting Social Competence. Useful for staff development. The lead publication for the Project - a very good place to start.

The booklet has been distributed free of charge to all schools in Scotland. The material is available electronically from the Scottish Executive website where it can be read directly or saved as a file for onward reproduction.


Promoting Social Competence: Effectiveness Survey

(Electronic only)

A searchable electronic database of over 700 items of relevant international evaluation research, with manual, typology, keywords, and brief review. Available as part of the downloadable resources (see below).


Promoting Social Competence: Practice & Resources Guides

(Full electronic or reduced paper versions)

The full (electronic) PRACTICE GUIDE contains brief details of 100 venues of interesting practice in promoting social competence in Scotland, and 10 deeper studies of various kinds. It reviews the lessons learned from practice, in terms of successful approaches and organisational issues in the process of delivery.

The full (electronic) RESOURCE GUIDE surveys international resource packs and books available for the promotion of social competence. It gives essential details of each.

These electronic versions of the two Guides are available as part of the downloadable resources (see below).


Taster Pack

For those with limited access to facilities, or needing a brief introduction to these resources, a much reduced version of both guides is available in hard copy: the "Taster Pack". This is not a complete summary or distillation of the full versions, but more a sampling of their content.

The Taster Pack is also available electronically in case users wish to download it and print multiple copies or sections of it for staff development purposes. The full electronic versions of the Effectiveness Survey and the Practice and Resources Guides (together with electronic versions of "taking a closer look at social competence", and the "taster pack") have been available together on a single CD-ROM. Information on availability from Learning & Teaching Scotland.

The Combined Effectiveness Survey & Practice & Resource Guide is also available a download version from this site.

Unforunately, only a version for IBM compatible machines is available.

Library of Resource Packs

The Project gathered together a great number of relevant practical resource packs in hard copy. These are available for inspection by visitors (but not for loan) in a special "Promoting Social Competence" section in the main University of Dundee library. This will be found in the periodicals sequence with the accession reference Per 370.15. Vistors may use the photocopying facilities within the library. Subjects covered include:

Canonmills Social Skills Course

These resource materials for a 16-week Social Skills and Anger Control programme for early adolescence were developed by Hazel Crawford in Canonmills School in Edinburgh, Scotland, from the work of Feindler and Ecton in the U.S.A. Practitioners and professionals may make one copy for their own use. Multiple copying and dissemination for gain are prohibited.

The text can be browsed now, saved as an html or plain text file (File, Save As), or be downloaded as a Word 97 file. The accompanying graphics are numbered according to the pages in the Word file to which they relate, but their location is also noted in the text of the html file for browsing:
