The School's research activity can be mapped into Research Groups and Research Centres. Within their area of expertise, Specialist Centres often combine Research and Continuing Professional Development.
IDRIS was established in December 2006 and pursues a vibrant programme of research with disabled people at the local, national and international levels. Current projects are funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, UK Department of Health and the US Department of Education. Topics include advanced technology and independent living, access to health and social care services, social exclusion and active living. All are interdisciplinary in nature and involve social scientists, psychologists, educationalists, computer scientists, environmental scientists and engineers. IDRIS' director is Professor Jennifer Harris, Chair of Social Science and the Deputy Director is Dr. Thilo Kroll.

The White Top Research Unit in an integral part of the School of Education, Social Work and Community Education. The Unit was established in 1991 with the purpose of developing research in the field of profound and multiple intellectual disability and related fields.
