The admission of research students tends to be a product of individualised discussion rather than automatic procedures. Also, because research students do not follow a time-tabled course of study, it can be difficult to keep track of their progress. The University makes a number of recommendations about supervision, including the suggestion of ways in which progress can be monitored.
The Research Programme Administrator maintains a database to track students from the stage of initial enquiry to final examination.
While staff are encouraged to speak to anyone who approaches them informally about a research degree, a note of any enquiry should be passed on to the Research Administrator (email eswce-research@dundee.ac.uk) who will record this and inform the relevant Research Programme Director.
The relevant Research Programme Director will then seek an appropriate supervisor, secure a formal application, and arrange interviews if necessary.
The supervisors and student will be expected to maintain a record of meetings, for their own use but in such a form that reference can be made to it if necessary.
A PhD candidate's progress will be monitored by an independent Thesis Monitoring Committee within the School, consisting of at least two members of staff not concerned with their supervision. This meets twice per year for full time students, and proportionately for part-time students. Students are also expected to make presentation to other students and staff.
One meeting for this committee will determine whether or not the student is to transfer from MPhil to PhD regulations. With part-time students especially, there may be some need for flexibility over when this decision is taken. In any case it is recommended that the committee meets at the end of the first year of study for full-time students, and before the end of the second year of study for part-time students.
Subsequently students are prepared for the examining process and viva, including the making of corrections, and the final submission of an accepted thesis.
