This is an undergraduate programme leading to a MA (Honours) Award. The award is also accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland. This accreditation recognises that participants who complete the programme successfully will have met the Standard for Initial Teacher Education and as such are eligible for employment in Scotland as a teacher of children between the ages of 3 and 12. Graduates are also eligible to teach anywhere within the European Union as well as a wide range of other countries throughout the world.
Currently entry requirements are as follows:
English at C (H, ILC H, HL) or English Language and Literature at C (GCSE) plus mathematics (SG at 2, Int2 at B, GCSE at B, Ord at B, SL at 5).
The programme runs over 4 years. In each year students undertake school placements. Much of the associated classes are designed to prepare them for their school placements. Year 1 provides an introduction to the Primary School and the Scottish Curriculum. Year 2, Semester 1 focuses on the upper primary stages. Year 2, Semester 2 focuses on the nursery stage. Year 3, Semester 1 focus on the Early Years. Year 3, Semester 2 focuses on addressing the needs of children of different abilities and teaching in multi-stage classrooms. In Year 4 students return to work with children in the Middle and Upper stages of the Primary School.
In addition to the core elements of the programme students may choose from a range of electives in Years 2,3 and 4.
Programme delivery is through a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials.
