Learning experiences in the University are closely linked with those from a series of practical placements in local authority Psychological Services. Active and self-managed learning methods are emphasised.
In the University, seminars and workshops are conducted co-operatively by both tutors and trainees. The curriculum is delivered through a range of traditional teaching and learning sessions, practical tasks, role play, video analysis and feedback, peer tutoring and assessment, demonstration and other forms of experiential learning. A characteristic feature of the Dundee programme is Problem Based Learning (PBL) which provides an integrated model of teaching and learning through delivery of the curriculum around a series of problem scenarios. Outside speakers are invited to lead sessions and individual and small group tutorials are also a core part of the programme.
Practical placements occupy two days per week in university teaching time, together with full-time blocks, each of a few weeks' duration. The placements are in local authority psychological services, usually as conveniently near to trainees' homes as quality assurance allows. Placements are in different services each year of the programme. Schools and agencies of types unfamiliar to the trainee and other professional agency settings can also be accessed.
Independent private study is time-tabled for one day per week during University semesters.
