He brings to the University some 18 years experience in the field of Community Learning and Development; with specialist experience at senior level in youth work and community planning. Terry completed his PhD in November 2000 and the focus of his major thesis was on youth participation and empowerment.

With a long standing interest in global poverty he has been an active fundraiser for organisations promoting overseas exchange work.
Terry Barber has developed a research profile which utilises his skills as a psychologist and community educator. He is particularly interested in how people develop resilience, well being and positive leadership in communities. Current research activity involves an exploration of formal, non-formal and informal methodologies in education and the potential influence of critical pedagogy. Terry is also involved in partnership research with Dundee City Council, exploring community psychology and critical transformation.
Involved in substantial successful research funding bids as a practitioner in the field of community education and since taking up his current post Terry has secured funding in partnership with colleagues of £20,000 from the Carnegie Trust and £10,000 to develop a pilot proposal and literature review exploring positive psychology. He is currently co-working on a major joint bid to support research into community well being.
More recently (2011) Terry has secured £15000 from LTS/Education Scotland to explore formal, non-formal and informal methodologies in education.
Terry teaches at undergraduate and post graduate levels, as well as CPD work in the field with community education and allied professions.
