Lucy Golden joined the Teaching in Further Education (TQ(FE)) team at Dundee University in 2004. Previously Lucy had taught Art and Design for many years and she had worked in Further Education since 1990. This experience helps her to understand the particular educational context in which TQ(FE) participants work and what the programme can offer them as lecturers and learners. As well as her work on the TQ(FE) programme Lucy works as an Art and Design external examiner for Cambridge International Examinations. She also writes international art and design examination papers. This experience allows her to have a wider picture of learning and assessment in a range of educational contexts which she finds very interesting and enriching.
In June 2010 Lucy completed the Postgraduate Certificate: Teaching in Higher Education, (PG Cert.THE) which has given her the opportunity to reflect upon and develop her practice, and create some new learning objects and resources on the TQ(FE) VLE. Her recent completion of this programme has also given her insights into the issues her students face in combining work, study and family life!
Lucy is fascinated by learning and why it sometimes does not happen, as well as how to foster and understand successful learning. She is currently engaged in several strands of action research: for example 'Engaging Online Distance Learners with their Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)' Golden, Gibbs and Booth 2011 (Pending).
This research explores and evaluates the navigational pathways which Lucy designed for our learners on the VLE. Theses are especially aimed at our undergraduate cohort to help them both navigate through the VLE, access the materials and meet the outcomes - a mix of instruction, and active learning, which she feels is key for these participants. She is also currently engaged in research into 'Referencing for Online Learners' and with colleagues on research into feedback for distance learners.
She has enjoyed selecting and placing many of the images you see in the units on the VLE. With her subject background in Art and Design, she feels strongly that image and design can communicate independently, as well as work in support of writing, and that they can help encourage reflective practice and our consideration of different perspectives.
Lucy feels that online learning via a VLE, such as ours, offers a unique opportunity for continuous professional development. She is keen to help others overcome any initial anxieties about IT and their ability to master all aspects of e-learning and online learning, based on her own experience of this. She finds being a programme tutor is a very positive experience both in terms of giving guidance and feedback on assessments and through observing participants' teaching. She enjoys working with colleagues on both practical and academic matters and feels she is constantly learning from their rich experience and range of skills.
