Biography

Dr Irene Malcolm graduated as a linguist, having studied in Glasgow, at the University of Kiel (Germany) and at the University of Vienna. Having begun her teaching career at a school in the east end of London, she later worked in the post-compulsory sector, as a lecturer, senior lecturer and programme director in a number of Further Education colleges. She was Project Director of a major knowledge transfer project, and this led to her appointment as Business Development Manager in an international training organisation. She held this post for six years, spending a proportion of her time in France and Germany. From this post she moved into the Higher Education sector.

Her research interests in work and learning developed from her vocationally oriented experience and her employment in business which allowed her to gain insights into a range of workplaces and industry sectors in the UK and overseas.

Before taking up a lectureship in education at Dundee Irene was a researcher and then Lecturer in Lifelong Learning at the Stirling Institute of Education (2004-2009) where she worked on the ESRC project, Learning Lives which examined adults' learning and work across the life course.

Research Groups & Collaborations

Irene recently became an Associate of proPEL: Professional Practice, Education and Learning. This is an international, collaborative and inter-disciplinary network for research and knowledge exchange in leading issues of professional education, practice and learning.

She is a member of Women in Lifelong Learning (WILL) which is part of the University Association for Lifelong Learning (UALL). She is collaborating with Professor Susan Jackson who is Pro-Vice-Master, Learning and Teaching and Professor of Lifelong Learning and Gender at Birkbeck College, University of London. They have worked together in the organisation of a WILL conference and a seminar that examined women's gendered pathways through learning. This work has led to the publication of a book which will appear in 2011.

She undertakes writing and research collaboration with Professors Tara Fenwick, John Field and Lydia Plowman from the Stirling Institute of Education.

Research Funding

She is presently collaborating with Professor Lydia Plowman on the submission of a funding proposal to the ESRC.
