Biography

Dr Fernando Lannes Fernandes is a Research Fellow at the School of Education, Social Work and Community Education. His research involves studies on urban marginality, stigmatization and social practices/strategies for human emancipation and community development. His research focuses on the role of stigma and social representations on the attitudes of practitioner and policy makers, with particular focus on youth and urban violence. His research also looks at strategies marginalized groups develop to overcome the effects of stigma in the lived experience, in particular in relation to their socio-symbolical place in the urban environment. At the University of Dundee he looks to establish international links in active collaboration with Civil Society Organizations in Brazil and Latin America.

Fernando's professional and academic background involves a strong understanding of the necessary connection between research and practice for social change. Following this path, in 2001 he joined the Observatório de Favelas, a Brazilian NGO, where he worked until 2009, being one of the directors. At Observatório de Favelas Fernando worked on design and coordination of research and projects on urban poverty, youth violence and community development. It also involved active collaboration with organizations such as ILO, ICCO and UNICEF, as well as NGOs and governments, and support and advice for marginalised groups, practitioners and policy makers. His work experience also includes lecturing in Human Geography at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro between 2004 and 2005, as well as lectures in the Post Graduation Course in Security and Citizenship at the Centre for Studies on Public Security and Citizenship, Cândido Mendes University.

His PhD thesis in Geography has reflected this trajectory, involving an analysis of stigma and marginalization on the poor youth's urban experience in Rio de Janeiro city.
