Biography

Erika Cunningham trained as a Primary teacher at Moray House in Edinburgh went on to teach in schools across the Lothians, Fife and the USA. After a few years teaching in the primary, she found herself (quite by accident!) working in a nursery setting. This turned out to be a positive change of direction and following this, went on to work in other pre-school settings in different management roles.

In 2006 she came to Dundee University on Secondment and in 2008 accepted a permanent post, in the main, teaching early years education. Since starting at the University, her role has diversified and developed and now she has varying responsibilities the BEd (Hons) Primary, PGDE Primary and MEd Programmes.

Erika has been developing her experiences in research for a few years, working independently and collaboratively with colleagues. This remains an ongoing process and an exciting (as well as challenging) learning curve. To add to this excitement and challenge, she has begun work on her PhD! Following on from previous research interests, she will be looking at the experiences of newly qualified teachers in their induction year. This will focus on issues relating to autonomy and professionalism.

When not in work, she enjoys clearing her head on long walks with her two dogs - perfect at the end of a busy day!
