Professor Graham Badman and Sarah Peel bring unique insights into the cases that have dominated public and professional debates on child protection in the past decade. With Alyson Leslie from the University of Dundee, who worked with them in the aftermath of the Baby Peter case, they will review the lessons from these cases and discuss the work transforming of practice, policy and morale in Haringey.

Professor Graham Badman CBE

Graham Badman is a former Teacher, Head Teacher, Inspector, Director of Education and Director of Children's Services. He is visiting Professor at the University of London Institute of Education and a Board Member of the Institute of Effective Education at the University of York.

He has been an advisor to the UK government for many years, including Specialist Advisor to the Education and Employment Parliamentary Select Committee. He also undertook the Badman Review, into Elective Home Education.

In December 2008 Graham was appointed by Ed Balls to take over from Sharon Shoesmith as Chair of the Haringey Local Safeguarding Children Board. He has since steered Haringey LSCB through reviews of the Baby Peter Connelly case and of several other serious case reviews. He has led a multi-agency partnership that has sought to strengthen safeguarding practice and raise professional standards, resulting in a positive endorsement from a recent government inspection.

Sarah Peel

Sarah Peel was formerly Performance and Business Development Manager for Haringey LSCB. From a business background, her career has included 17 years in Haringey including roles in staff development, performance management, multi-agency working and exploring how key lessons from child care tragedies can be learned and used to change policy, process and practice. Sarah managed the reviews relating to the death of Baby Peter and the process of integrating their findings into practice.

Sarah has recently been recruited to the post of Group Manager & Local Authority Designated Officer at City and Hackney Safeguarding Children Board to help take forward that Hackney's radical new approach to children's services.

Graham and Sarah have contributed to child protection seminars in London and last year gave a highly regarded joint presentation on the Lessons from the Death of Baby Peter at the University of Huddersfield. This is the first time they have presented in Scotland.
