Following the University Review the new Childhood Practice programme became a pathway within the BA Professional Development structure. The content covers the Standard for Childhood Practice (2007) specified by the Scottish Government, Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Scotland and the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).
The purpose is to improve leadership skills and to show how informed professional action can ensure better outcomes for children. The programme enables participants to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes to become innovative, reflective and enquiring professionals, therefore it is an appropriate programme of study matched to the needs of childhood professionals nationally and internationally. In Scotland, the Childhood Practice award is required from 2011 for registration as a manager in day care services for children in Scotland. For this reason, we required validation by SSSC and we were approved in July 2008 ready to commence the new programme in September.
On a suitably sunny day in September the new Childhood Practice degree programme was launched in Dundee. The programme is work based, part time and delivered flexibly using a blended learning approach including interactive online distance learning.
