Power Down Weekend
Good practice – How does this effect the University Carbon
Footprint?
One way that everyone can help to contribute to the size of the Carbon Footprint of the University is by staff minimising the amount of energy required to carry out their own individual work. The University is carrying out an experiment to gain a measure of the scope of potential energy/carbon emissions reductions through simple good energy practice measures.
Five University buildings, one from each of the Colleges and the other from Central Services were monitored over the weekend 4 - 7 December 2009 to produce an average electricity usage for a typical weekend. The results are as listed below:
| College | Building | Weekend Average use (kWh) | Weekend 4th- 7th Dec (kWh) | % Savings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Life Sciences | Wellcome Trust Building | 22,900 | 21,240 | 7.25% |
| CASE | Queen Mother Building | 3,562 | 3,206 | 9.99% |
| Central Services | Dalhousie | 4,876 | 4,732 | 2.95% |
| CASS | Carnegie Building | 925 | 865 | 6.49% |
| CDMN | Airlie East | 378 | 365 | 3.44% |
Well done and thanks to all staff and students who contributed to the switch off.
We are aware that these results are generally subject to change dependant on the planned weekend activities for each building on the particular dates chosen. It is the intention therefore to carry out a similar type experiment early in the new year to provide a comparative result.
