Student Stories : Wenbin Guo (Nemo)
Originally from Zhejiang, China, Nemo joined the 3+1+1 Study Programme and successfully completed his honours year. Due to his excellent academic performance, he was awarded the Dean’s Scholarship of Merit. He has now returned to Dundee to pursue his postgraduate studies after a summer back in China, having graduated from his undergraduate degree.
I feel that the academic atmosphere in China does not reflect my full potential, as I am not the best at sitting exams whilst in China they place heavy emphasis on them. I have heard amazing feedback from former students who took part in this programme, saying that it is a great place for further study. Since I have been here myself, I feel the atmosphere is beyond fantastic. I am particularly impressed with the guidance I have had in writing a good standard project, as well as being taught how to build mathematical models and using mathematical software to solve problems. The classes are well organised, and whenever I encounter a problem, my supervisor is easily reachable and always helpful. I thank them for the excellent project I produced! Furthermore, I am very fond of Mathematical Biology, and the University of Dundee is recognised internationally as one of the leading centres of research relating to the discipline.
Student life in Dundee is amazing; there is always something interesting happening to allow relaxation over the weekend. I have made many western friends, and often cook Chinese food for them! I feel that the University has helped me settle into university life, such as assisting me with opening a bank account.
For future applicants, I feel that they need to have a good understanding of the subject they are going to apply for and how it will make a difference to their major in China.
