Student Stories : Nasir Ahmad
Nasir has successfully completed his first year of Physics with the University of Dundee, an experience which he thoroughly enjoyed. During the summer of 2012, he has been taking part in a research internship with the Biomedical Physics research group which is directed by Dr Paul Campbell, and has found this to be a fascinating and worthwhile experience.
My course
I chose to study Physics at the University of Dundee as it is a well established and respected university in Scotland, as is its Physics department. The small number of students studying physics means that there staff-student relationships are favourable compared with other larger Physics Departments elsewhere.
Dundee is a quiet yet eventful city. From a student’s perspective, there are always new and fun groups and activities that you can join. Furthermore, the University itself is a community within the city with a very pleasant and friendly atmosphere, where people from all walks of life meet and interact.
Favourite part of my course
The favourite part of the course so far has been the Mathematics and Physics rules in our second year module Solid State Physics and Devices. In this module, we were very much encouraged to come up with our own ideas and think about the application of our physics knowledge, on topics such as the mechanisms of atoms. This led to a very interesting, stimulating and idea-filled module in which I learned about areas I did not think I would come across, such as quantum theory. He cites his present involvement with the undergraduate research group as another particularly enjoyable and unique experience.
For future applicants
I am particularly impressed with the patient, approachable and welcoming attitude of the teaching staff, especially with answering any questions regarding your learning and studies. I am confident that as long as you have keen interest in Physics and their practical applications, they will have an exciting and inspiring learning journey.
