Student Stories : Jonathan Weightman
Jonathan originally came to Dundee University to study Accountancy, however quickly realised his interest lies in Mathematics, therefore he decided to transfer his course. He was impressed with the efficient help he received during the transfer and the flexibility the University offers. He is an active student ambassador and assists University visit/open days, supporting the Student Recruitment Service.
My course and life in Dundee
The course on the whole had been very enjoyable for me. Lectures are clear and the contents explained very well. Lecturers are very friendly, professional and approachable. They are always willing to explain the ideas in greater detail patiently if you do not understand at the first instance, which certainly contributed to my successful performance. Also there are regular departmental social events held throughout the year – a great way to mingle with the very sociable staff!
I have been involved with the Dundee University Sub Aqua Club (DUSAC), through which I was able to continue the hobby I have loved since young! Via the club, I embarked on an 8-week internship opportunity with a diving centre in Tenerife, and subsequently obtained a professional diving opportunity! Being involved with DUSAC allowed me to expand my social circle, as well as developing my team-working skills.
Dundee is a lovely place for students with a strong sense of community; I am particularly impressed with the close-knit top-class facilities on campus, including very high standard accommodation with en-suite rooms. The city centre is only 10 minutes away, with many bars, clubs, restaurants, café and shops. Coming from a very small village in the countryside I settled into life in Dundee very easily. In general, my student experience absolutely exceeded my expectation!
Employability
I had previously considered teaching as my career option, therefore took part in the Student Tutoring Programme which was run by the Careers Service for students who are considering teaching as a career. It aims to increase their employability via gaining some invaluable classroom experience in a local primary and/or secondary school. It was a very comprehensive and helpful programme from the Careers Service.
Advice for applicants
Applicants should be aware that they do not study pure Mathematics modules in 1st and 2nd years, but in 3rd and 4th years they will study topics matching the research strengths of the Mathematics Department, giving them experience in a variety of fields. Also I would encourage new students to move into on-campus accommodation so that they can meet other students easily when they first arrive!
