Student Stories : Graeme Allison
Graeme initially came to the University of Dundee to study Geography, however felt after the first year it was not the course for him, therefore decided to transfer to Mechanical Engineering in his second year. After his recent graduation, he is now excited about initiating his career with National Oilwell Varco as a Graduate Engineer in September, and aims to become an expert in a specialist engineering field.
Life in Dundee
I love Dundee as a student not only because it has a high standard of University facilities, also because of the lively social scene and night life, particularly the Student Union! For me, it was one of the best aspects. In general, Dundee has a great, easy-going student atmosphere.
Having been the team leader of the DRIVE Team (University of Dundee Formula Student Team), it has given me the opportunity to challenge my acumen and develop social skills that I would otherwise not have been exposed to. This gives me the opportunity to put my ideas and designs into real-life practical situations – under an extremely competitive car-racing environment, where industry professionals can critique and interact in suggesting alternative methods and compare other designs. I was able to apply the knowledge gained from this experience into my honours project.
Highlight of my course
In 2010 and 2011, I undertook two 1-week intensive courses in Stralsund, Germany with the DRIVE team which provided large insight into other university’s facilities, thinking, and teaching method along with students from all over the globe. It has given me a novel perspective on engineering in an international context.
Employability
I gained 6-months work experience with a Dundee engineering company AGRA Engineering, during which I worked in the machine shop. It has given me exposure to a wide range of objects and how they can transformed from a state of disrepair to looking and working as new.
Having spoken to a number of employers, it is clear to me that they are looking for something extra on top of a university degree, to demonstrate that you are committed and interested in the subject. Therefore if possible, work experience is something that you should be looking for from the end of 2nd or 3rd year. Extra – curriculum roles in the University like sports clubs/events will certainly help enhance your CV. There are plenty of opportunities to broaden your horizons, so take advantage of opportunities on offer.
