Student Stories : Edgars Damlics
A native Latvian, Edgars has successfully completed his penultimate year of his degree whilst balancing his significant sporting contributions with both Dundee University’s Basketball team, also the University Team for Scotland. He is also about to embark on an exciting summer internship working in China, before returning to undertake his final year of study here at Dundee.
My course and life in Dundee
Quality criteria were of utmost importance when it came to deciding which course to undertake. I was extremely attracted to the course in Dundee as it has been ranked in the top 5 in the UK, and first in Scotland during recent years. After four years on this often demanding course, I found the lecturers very approachable and I particularly enjoy the lectures which were forthcoming in attitude. They also had clear relevance to real-world professional expectations. Dundee University is perfect for a fantastic student experience as the city is relatively small, and all facilities are available on campus, it made me feel a real ‘sense of belonging’.
I have been playing for the Dundee University Mens Basketball from Year One, and it is one of the friendliest and dedicated team I have ever played for! Having been appointed many positions of responsibilities, such as the president …. It is like my ‘second family’, one of the main reasons why I love time spent here in Dundee!
Employability
I understand, in the current intensely competitive market, experience is of utmost importance in maintaining a competitive edge in seeking [work] employment. Having benefited from the University’s Career Service, I obtained a career-enhancing summer internship in China which I am looking forward to immensely.
