Prospective Undergraduates

Why English at Dundee?

  1. Flexible MA Programmes:
    • English at Dundee can be studied in conjunction with many other subjects, in Joint or Combined Honours formats, including History, Film, Philosophy and Politics, to name but a few.
    • Students take modules across three or four subject areas in their first and second years and do not have to finalise their choice of degree course until year 3.
    • English at Dundee offers the opportunity to develop your own enthusiasms within a structured programme which will teach you to think about a range of personal, cultural and historical topics.
  2. Teaching Quality:
    • English has received the highest rating in Teaching Quality Assessment.
    • We also topped the UK overall in a recent Guardian league table, and has been consistently high ever since.
    • We take account of student views and needs through a system of consultation.
  3. Career Prospects:
    • Statistics show that students of English are often better at securing 'graduate-level' posts than comparable humanities graduates.
    • Employers are often drawn to English graduates as they possess good written and spoken communication skills. They have also received rigorous training in working independently and thinking critically.
    • We encourage skills which will be of real use in later life. It has been said that English aims to help students 'develop the insight of an artist, the analytical precision of a scientist and the persuasiveness of a lawyer'.
  4. Study Creative Writing:
    • English at Dundee has a Professor of Creative Writing. Kirsty Gunn is a critically acclaimed award-winning novelist who teaches at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as organising readings by visiting novelists and poets.
    • At undergraduate level, we offer two modules to help establish creative writing and practice. At Level 3 we offer Introduction to Creative Writing Practice and at Level 4 Making Writing Matter both of which are designed, in practical workshops and seminars, to help you recognise and develop your own distinctive creative writing capabilities. Single Honours students of English are able to take both modules (up to 60 credits) as part of their degree programme.
    • At postgraduate level, we offer a new MLitt in Writing Practice and Study.  This fully accredited course is is like no other available in the UK. It is distinctive in its approach and teaching, and highly engaged in the world of contemporary publishing, offering students the opportunity to meet with writers and publishers from around the UK and beyond and to take part in our varied and exciting range of literary activities, from performing their own work to being "showcased" at our Literary Festival.  Two creative writing modules, EN52025 and EN51016, are available to students studying for the MLitt/PGDip English Studies.  Find out more about creative writing at postgraduate level: what makes Dundee different?.
  5. Study Comics & Graphic Novels
    • Undergraduate modules at Dundee include one on British Writers of Comics and Graphic Novels, which allows students to study the work of Alan Moore, Grant Morrison and Neil Gaiman.
    • The MLitt in Comics Studies is the only one of its kind in the UK – a one year course allowing students to examine comics and graphic novels in terms of genre, style, formal properties and history, while also providing, in various option modules, the opportunity to focus on the creative aspects of comics production. The core modules explore comics as autobiography and different international comics traditions, and the dissertation element of the course allows students to research any aspect of comics history (subject to acceptance of a proposal).
    • Dundee is one of the great powerhouses of comics production, not just in the UK, but internationally.  Find out more about comics at Dundee.
  6. Study Film:
    • Undergraduate modules at Dundee include Film Studies options and you can study for a joint honours programme in English and Film Studies. Students taking this joint course, and working in the two subjects in an interactive way, will find that their appreciation of both literature and film will be enhanced.
    • The Film Studies team has strong links with the Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre, Dundee's unique cinema and art gallery, and help organise film programmes which bring together students and the general community.
  7. Join a Theatre Company:
    • The department is also home to the JOOT Theatre Company, a drama group run by Dr Jodi-Anne George which specialises in Medieval and Early Modern theatre. The company is largely comprised of current English students and has recently been invited to perform at the Sorbonne in Paris.
  8. An Attractive, Central Campus:
    • The University of Dundee's city campus is a pleasing blend of old and new buildings in an attractive setting of lawns and gardens. Teaching, recreational and residential buildings are side-by-side to form a friendly self-contained community.
    • English lectures take place in and around the heart of the campus, close to key buildings such as IT suites and the library, and yet close to Dundee's cultural quarter with an array of cafes, art galleries, gift shops and more.
    • Visit the Campus Guide to take a virtual tour of your prospective surroundings.
