EN52010: Postwar American Fiction and Transatlantic Exchange

Module Organiser: Dr Aliki Varvogli

This module will explore key texts of American literature written after 1945. Using recent theories of the Transatlantic and the postnational, it will explore how history, cultural memory, travel, immigration, literary influence and textual experimentation have played a significant part in both shaping and helping to redefine the American literary landscape.

The option will be organised around 5 seminars, along with structured independent study and online collaboration:

1. Theories of the Transatlantic*
2. Vladimir Nabokov, Lolita
3. Paul Auster, The Music of Chance
4. Jonathan Safran Foer, Everything Is Illuminated
5. Russell Banks, The Darling

*Reading for our first class drawn from:

• Fredric Jameson and Masao Miyoshi, eds., The Cultures of Globalization
• Walter D Mignolo, 'Globalization, Civilization Processes, and the Relocation of Languages and Cultures'
• Fredric Jameson, ‘Notes on Globalization as a Philosophical issue’

Assessment

One 5,000-word essay.
