MLitt Module
EN52037: Film and Theatre
Module Organiser: Dr Brian Hoyle
This module will appeal to students with an interest in literature, creative writing and performance as well as those with an interest in cinema and twentieth century visual culture. It examines the relationship between theatre and cinema in America and Britain from the early 1930s until the present.
Topics covered during the semester include:
- how playwrights shaped the conventions of screenwriting
- film and theatre censorship in Britain and America
- how the ideas of dramatic theorists such as Brecht and Stanislavski have influenced cinema
- how film theory has impacted upon modern theatre
Each week the students will study a play which was adapted for the cinema by the original playwright, examining the adjustments required in transposing a work from play to screenplay, and stage to screen. Students will also be able to examine the role of the film director in these works and address what is meant by the terms “theatrical” and “cinematic”.
