MLitt/PGDip English Studies

as part of the MLitt in Humanities with Specialisation

The MLitt in English Studies is a taught, one year full-time or two-year part-time, postgraduate degree offered by the English Programme as part of the MLitt in Humanities with Specialisation.

It has particular (not exclusive) emphases on the 'long' Nineteenth Century, on the 'long' Twentieth Century, and on creative writing. It provides outstanding opportunity for students interested in pursuing Nineteenth and/or Twentieth Century and contemporary topics beyond a first degree, directed by specialists in the fields, before embarking upon a PhD.

As well as being a research preparation degree, it also caters directly for students who wish to take their first degree to a higher level of advanced study, without embarking upon a Doctorate.

One of the most distinctive features of the MLitt in English Studies is that it offers optional taught modules in creative writing, together with the opportunity to undertake a creative writing dissertation. Along with the focus on Nineteenth and Twentieth Century literatures in English, together with creative writing, the programme also offers specialist course options in other literary periods.

Course Structure (2012-13)

Students must take the core module, two optional modules, plus the dissertation (for the award of MLitt).
