The Scots Tongue: Origins, Varieties, Uses

stewart Dr Jim Stewart of the English programme will give a talk on the subject of the Scots language on Saturday 18th February at 2 pm in the Baxter Suite, Room 1.36, 2nd Floor, Tower Building.

As a working poet Jim Stewart is interested in Scots as a poetic resource. His talk will focus on what you can do with the language.  What are its characteristics and how have these lent themselves to poetry over several centuries? He will discuss samples from the medieval poet Robert Henryson, through Robert Burns, to the contemporary Robert Crawford.

Jim teaches English and Creative Writing at the University of Dundee. He publishes poetry regularly in various outlets, including New Writing Scotland. He is a native of Dundee, and currently lives in Arbroath.

This talk has been organised by the Scottish Society of the Chartered Institute of Linguists.

All welcome.
