Dundee Comics Prize Winners, 2011: The Tartan Bucket Prize
In 2011 the University of Dundee announced The Tartan Bucket Prize, a partnership between the School of Humanities and DC Thomson, the Dundee-based publisher of comics such as The Dandy and The Beano, and beloved characters such as The Broons and Oor Wullie. The aim of the prize was to encourage the creation of a humorous story in the DC Thomson style, and to provide a forum for the emerging comics creators.
The competition was managed by Dr Chris Murray, director of the Scottish Society for Comics Studies, and a lecturer who teaches courses on comics. He co-ordinated the judging panel, consisting of staff from DC Thomson, as well as staff from the University with an interest in comics.
The winners were announced at the 2011 Dundee Comics Day. Steve English, who created a two page story called “Belle’s Magic Mobile” about a girl and her remarkable mobile phone, was the overall winner. He was awarded £1,000 prize money, a certificate, publication of his story in The Beano, and an actual tartan bucket full of DC Thomson merchandise.
Details of all of the competition winners, including extracts of the winning comic strips, can be viewed on the Comics at Dundee website.
