War and Conflict in Popular Texts and Images

The Scottish Word and Image Group (based at the University of Dundee) and the War and Representation Network (based at Birkbeck in London) are hosting a joint day seminar at the University of Dundee on Saturday 1st October 2011.
This day seminar examines representations of War and Conflict, through the diverse relationships between verbal and visual forms, and specifically addresses popular texts and images.
The keynote speakers will be broadcaster and historian Owen Dudley Edwards, author of British Children's Fiction in the Second World War (EUP, 2009) and Pat Mills, author of the ground-breaking Comic, Charlie's War. DC Thomson's Commando Comic 50th anniversary exhibition will be opening at the University of Dundee that day. The editor and DC Thomson artists will be available to talk at a reception in the evening. Dundee's Museum Services will also be mounting a special display of artwork and writing by Dundee's resident Great War-poet and artist, Joseph Lee. Lee played an important part in the development of popular illustrated publications in the city and beyond.
There will be panel papers on subjects such as:

- Propaganda and Masculinity'
- 'D-Day on Film'
- 'Digging for Victory'
- 'Illustrated War Poetry'
- 'War Comics'
- 'British War Film, Theatre and Censorship'
- 'Cold War Military Training'
- 'The Popular Image of U-Boats'
- 'Images of Terrorism'
