Ian Hague on Multi-sensory Aspects of Comics
Ian Hague (University of Chichester) will give a talk on comics entitled ‘“Comics is [not] a Mono-sensory Medium”: Multi-sensory Aspects of Comics and Graphic Novels’ on Friday 28th October in the Baxter Suite, Tower Building, Room 1.36, 4-6pm. All welcome. This event is free and there is no need to book.
The talk will draw on a brief survey of definitions of comics, showing how they often support (implicitly or explicitly) the notion that comics are exclusively visual in nature. Then Ian will argue that this approach isn’t necessarily as valid as it appears because comics creators often employ non-visual content to communicate information. Following on from this theoretical grounding, Ian will present examples of the ways in which comics express meaning using hearing, touch, smell and taste that goes beyond what it is possible to do using visual content alone.
Ian Hague is an associate lecturer at the University of Chichester, whose teaching and research focuses on cultural and media history. He is the director of Comic Forum, an annual academic event on comics that takes place in Leeds every November as part of the Thought Bubble sequential art festival. Further information is available on Ian Hague's staff profile page at the University of Chichester.
