Recent Graduate Success
A recent successful doctoral student in English, Susan Rennie, has just heard that her thesis has been accepted for publication by Oxford University Press. Susan graduated from the University of Dundee in June 2010 and is particularly pleased that her work, supervised by Dr David Robb, will be published without major revision by such a prestigious academic publisher. No date has yet been set for publication, though she hopes that it will appear in 2012.
Her book is focussed on John Jamieson (1759-1838), a Scottish church minister who created the most important dictionary of the Scots language before the twentieth century. The first publication of his Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Languagewas in 1808, and it was significant in the whole history of dictionary making.
Susan is also a highly experienced lexicographer in her own right, having done much work for the Oxford dictionaries and also having been centrally involved in the creation in Dundee of the online Dictionary of the Scots Language, which was part of a project based in the University of Dundee under the directorship of the late Dr Victor Skretkowicz. Their work is available online at www.dsl.ac.uk.
