Research Grant for Professor Andrew Roberts

Andrew Roberts Professor Andrew Roberts of the English programme has been awarded an Arts and Humanities Research Council Grant for a partnership with the Scottish Poetry Library in Edinburgh.

Entitled ‘The Archive of Reading’, this project will involve the creation of a unique archive of research into the process of reading poetic and visual art works, making permanently available to the public the results of the ‘Poetry Beyond Text’ project which Professor Roberts has led over the last two years. The archive, to be housed in the Scottish Poetry Library (just off the Canongate in Edinburgh’s Old Town), will include, alongside commissioned works of art and poetry to be donated to the Library, eye-tracking and other data on the processes of reading, assessing and interpreting visual poetry, concrete poetry, digital poetry, artists’ books, prints and poetry-photography books.

Dr Lisa Otty, also of the English programme, will be planning and implementing the archive in collaboration with Julie Johnstone, the librarian at the SPL. Dr Otty will also be organising an exhibition of commissioned works (which will open at the SPL on 13 May 2001, and run until 18 July), with associated readings and talks by poets and artists.

As part of the project there will be workshops for members of the public in several cities around Scotland.
