Professor Kitson Invited to Deliver Major Plenary Lecture on Romantic Literature and Science
Professor Peter Kitson of the English programme has been invited to deliver a plenary lecture to the major international conference of the German Society for English Romanticism to be held at the University of Koblenz-Landau in October 2009.
Professor Kitson, the President of both the British Association for Romantic Studies and the English Association and a leading scholar of the global context of eighteenth and nineteenth-century British literature, is one of five distinguished scholars in the field of British Romanticism to be offered a keynote plenary lecture at this highly-prestigious event. The other plenaries are the world-leading authorities: Professor Frederick Burwick (UCLA), Professor Stephen C. Behrendt (University of Nebraska); Professor Noah Heringman (University of Missouri-Columbia); and Dr Cecilia Powell.
Professor Kitson's lecture will concern the fascinating and timely subject of the exchanges between European and Chinese science in the Romantic period which is related to his current research on the representation of the China of the Qing Empire in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and the cultural exchanges between Britain and China at this time.
