Ranked 7th best University English Department in the UK by The Guardian University Guide 2009 and assessed as containing world-leading research among its publications in the latest UK research assessment exercise, English is one of the most popular, stimulating and best-recruiting of the core Humanities disciplines. One of the largest programmes, English at Dundee welcomes around 200 new students each year. We are firmly committed to their success and well-being.
As well as our established mainstream English Literature modules, we offer a new and already extremely successful English and Film Joint Honours degree programme. Additionally, the programme also now offers thirty-credit modules in Creative Writing for students on the Single Honours English programme. Single Honours students are allowed to take, as part of their English degree, two Creative Writing modules (60 credits), or one Film module (30 credits), or a combination of one of either (choice restrictions apply for Joint Honours students of English and another Honours subject).
English has an extremely strong reputation for teaching and has consistently been rated as among the top English Departments in Scotland by both The Guardian and The Times Higher Education Good University Guide. See some of our awards for teaching quality.
English is a strongly research orientated Department. English scored highly in the latest 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. A full 90% of English's research publications between 2001 and 2007 were rated as of international excellence in terms of their 'originality, significance and rigour' and 45% of our research output was rated in the two very highest categories of 'international excellence'. The RAE English panel found that our output demonstrated 'substantial evidence of internationally excellent and internationally recognised research quality' and judged that the Department's research contained 'world-leading quality'.
