Research Interests - Laura Findlay
JONATHAN SAFRAN FOER, born in 1977, lives in Brookyn, NY. He is most famous for his first novel
Everything is Illuminated (2002), a heartbreakingly humorous tale about a young American boy, Jonathan, who travels to the Ukraine in search of the woman who saved his grandfather during the Nazi invasion. The novel won much adoration and gained Foer a Guardian First Book Award and the National Jewish Book Award. It has since been made into a film starring Elijah Wood. Foer's second novel,
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2005) attracted much controversy as it deals with a young boy, Oskar, who has lost his father in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. As the book was published only four years after the attacks it was considered by many to deal with a subject matter which was still too raw to fictionalise. Despite this Foer remains one of the more promising young writers to emerge from the New York scene.
