Introduction to Levels 1 and 2
English
The level 1 course takes the form of two modules. Each module comprises 11 teaching weeks of two one-hour lectures and a tutorial. The first module concentrates on the development of critical reading skills, an emphasis that continues in the second module, but to which is added a more systematic introduction to different ways of thinking about, and discussing, literature and literary history. A wide range of different texts is used – drama, poetry, and novels – and you will be expected to cover one text each week. The year is intended both to provide a foundation for more advanced study, but also to be of interest to students who do not intend to continue with English after one year.
At level 2 we continue to help students to read and understand individual texts, and to become aware of the range of approaches to literature which is possible. We continue to explore aspects of literary history, and again the texts are chosen with a view to being of interest to non-specialist students, but also to providing a further preparation for Honours work in English. Teaching will consist of two lectures and one tutorial each week. You will be expected to cover at least one text each week, with additional background reading.
Film
The Level 1 film course is comprised of 2 modules, Reading the Screen in Semester 1, which explores the visual aspects of cinema, ranging from mise-en-scene to the role and purpose of editing, and the director as auteur. The Semester 2 module, Perspectives and Movements, engages with distinct cinematic movements such as Italian Neorealism, French New Wave, British Cinema 1930-60 and Japanese cinema of the 1950s. Screenings of the relevant films will be provided.
The Level 2 film modules are Classic Hollywood and Film Noir. These modules allow consideration of film as both industrial and cultural products. Classical Hollywood is split into three sections – the Studio System and Hollywood as Industry; Hollywood at War and the propaganda machine; and then a journey into film genre. Film Noir engages with the very specific aesthetics of this popular film genre, looking at aspects of representation, the influence of German Expressionism, the city as character, and neo-noir. Film screenings will be provided.
