At undergraduate level, the English programme offers a Level 4 module called “Contemporary British Writers of Comics and Graphic Novels”, which examines the work of celebrated writers Alan Moore, Grant Morrison and Neil Gaiman, their relationship to literature, and their collaborations with artists who illustrate their work.
The English programme also offers an MLitt/PGDip in Comics Studies. This is the only course of its kind in the UK, allowing students to examine comics and graphic novels in terms of genre, style, formal properties and history, while also providing, in various option modules, the opportunity to focus on the creative aspects of comics production. The core modules explore comics as autobiography and different international comics traditions, and the dissertation element of the course allows students to research any aspect of comics history (subject to acceptance of a proposal).
