In 1986, E.U. Rafailov received an M.Sc. (Diploma with Honours) in molecular optics at Physics Department of Samarqand State University (USSR).

Since 1988, Dr. E.U. Rafailov has been engaged in the research and development of high-power CW and short pulse diode lasers, nonlinear and integrated optics. From 1988 to 1991, Edik Rafailov was a postgraduate student at A.F. Ioffe Institute, St Petersburg, Russia, where in 1992 he received a PhD in the physics of semiconductors and dielectrics. He was responsible for the first demonstration (at the Ioffe Institute in St. Petersburg) of novel high-power Al-free laser diodes (InGaAsP/GaAs, 760<l<880 nm and around 980 nm) and provided experimental evidence of the key advantage of Al-free lasers over conventional AlGaAs/GaAs laser diodes. For this work he individually (1993) and his research group (1994) were awarded funding from the International Science Foundation (ISF). He was a co-investigator on a project that received funding from the ISF (1994-1996) in collaboration with Professor Zh. I. Alferov (Nobel Prize winner in Physics in 2000). He stayed as a Researcher and a Senior Researcher at the institute until 1997 when he moved to St Andrews as a Research Fellow. During this period he was responsible for the first demonstration of femtosecond pulse generation directly from laser diodes (in collaboration with Prof. W. Sibbett). In 2005, Dr Rafailov became a Lecturer in the Division of Electronic Engineering and Physics at the University of Dundee. He also remains an Honorary Lecturer at the University of St Andrews.
