The Photonics and Nanoscience Group was founded in 2005 with the move of Prof. Edik Rafailov from the University of St. Andrews to the University of Dundee.

Our group conducts cutting-edge experimental research in a wide variety of high-power and ultrashort-pulse compact laser diode based sources, emitting in the visible, IR, mid-IR and THz spectral ranges. We also have a number of collaborations for implementing compact and low-cost lasers in biophotonics

Recent Activities:

December 2012: The HiCore project has gathered a lot of attention and is reported in The Herald, The Scotsman and The Courier newspapers. The HiCore project is based on work with optical crystals as versatile components in systems such as highly efficient ultra-compact lasers and "conical refraction" devices, which is enabling a new degree of laser beam shape control.  (Newspaper cuttings HiCore_NewspaperPR_19120212!)

September 2012: Collaborative meeting between the colleges of Arts, Science and Engineering (CASE) and Life Sciences (CLS) is a resounding success, and many future research goals are discussed. Some of the presentations given include:

June 2012: Ksenia Fedorova received the SPIE-sponsored award for first place Young Scientist Presentation at the 15th International Conference "Laser Optics 2012".

February 2012: Group members attend the Franco-Scotland Meeting in Photonics at the Royal Society of Edinburgh (and celebratory pint afterwards).

November 2011: Tomasz Kruczek received the prize for Best Student Paper, presented at the Conference on Electronics, Telecommunications and Computers (CETC 2011).

September 2011: Ross Leyman received the prize for Best Student Presentation at the 2nd EOS Topical Meeting on Lasers (ETML'11).

 

New Research Grants Awarded:

2012-2016: FP7 IP program "NEWLED" consisting of 15 partners and a value of 11.6M Euros, to begin in November this year.

2012-2014: FP7 R4SME project "HiCore" with a value of 1.5M Euros, to begin in October this year.

2012-2016: FP7 IAPP project "TERA" with a value of value 1.1M Euros, began in May this year.

2012-2013: KTP grant, "Development of a novel class high power laser source based on conical refraction crystal technology."
