Welcome to the Division of Physics
Welcome to the home page for the Division of Physics at the University of Dundee. This site contains information for prospective undergraduate and postgraduate students, current students, members of staff and specialists looking for information about research and consultancy activities.
The past two years have seen the Division entering into a new and exciting phase of growth, with eminent staff appointments in cutting edge technology sectors such as; renewable energy, nanotechnology, bio-medical physics, optical manipulation and photonics. This continual reinvigoration of the Division allows state-of-the-art teaching and research to compelment traditional fundamental knowledge transfer, so as to provide excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
We are committed to excellence in both teaching and research, and our division boasts a proud tradition with both endeavours dating back over one hundred years. The following pages contain information about the division and the members of staff. The division consistently achieves very high assessments for the quality of our courses, and indeed, the University as a whole received the highest teaching quality rating of all UK universities in a recent survey by The Times newspaper. The division is also placed 8th in the UK, and ranked best of the Scottish physics departments for teaching, as highlighted in 2009's Guardian Higher Education League Tables.
Prominent past successes have included the wartime development of RADAR by Robert Watson Watt and, more recently, the development of amorphous silicon thin film devices, a cornerstone of the multi-million dollar electronic display industry.
