Dundee Health Economics Group (DHEG)

DHEG is a group of economists working on health-related issues within the School of Business at the University of Dundee

Core Objective

To work in conjunction with health disciplines in order to produce high quality research, performing economic evaluations of interventions and analysing the economic aspects of health care provision

Analysis

DHEG is able to work with health researchers to apply the main techniques of economic evaluation in health care, including Cost Effectiveness, Cost Utility and Cost Benefit Analyses.

Completed Projects

• An Evaluation to Assess the Implementation of NHS Delivered Alcohol Brief Interventions in Scotland (PI: Tessa Parker (Stirling), DHEG collaborator: Dennis Petrie - funded by NHS Health Scotland)
• Evaluating the impact of initiating health interventions within police holding cell environments (PI: John Hurley (Nursing), DHEG collaborator: Sushil Mohan)
• Development of tools to measure and explain changes in health inequalities in Scotland and benchmark performance (PI: Paul Allanson, in collaboration with Dennis Petrie and Ulf-G Gerdtham (Lund University, Sweden) - funded by CSO)
• Scoping study of the economic impact on the alcohol industry of pricing and non-price policies to regulate the affordability and availability of alcohol in Scotland (PI: Dennis Petrie, other collaborators: Anne Ludbrook (HERU, Aberdeen), John Dewhurst, Catia Montagna & Hassan Molana - funded by NHS Health Scotland)

• Spatial structures of socioeconomic characteristics, health behaviours, healthcare utilisation and health outcomes in Scotland (PI: Arnab Bhattacharjee, in collaboration with Maiti, Petrie, Dibben, Maclennan, Feng)
• Squamous cell carcinoma Prevention in Organ transplant recipients using Topical treatments (SPOT): a feasibility study (in collaboration with Harwood, Proby, Lear, Green, Wheatley; DHEG collaborators : Paul Allanson, Martin Jones & Andrzej Kwiatkowski - funded by NIHR £ 249,967)
• Substance Misuse Information Tayside (SUMIT) - Effective management of information to maximize the delivery of care, treatment and recovery in drug and alcohol misusers(PI: Brian Kidd, Medical School, Dundee. DHEG collaborators: Dennis Petrie, Catia Montagna, Fu-min Tseng & Shaolin Wang - funded by NHS Tayside)
• Data-driven quality improvement in primary care (PI: Prof Bruce Guthrie, Community Health Sciences, Dundee. DHEG collaborator: Dennis Petrie).
• A community-based longitudinal study on adherence to endocrine therapy and cancer outcomes (PI: Colin McCowan, Community Health Sciences, Dundee. DHEG collaborator: Dennis Petrie & Shaolin Wang)
• Socioeconomic Cost of Bereavement in Scotland (in collaboration with colleagues from The Robert Gordon University, NHS Tayside and Cruse Bereavement Care Scotland and with support from University of Utrecht and University of York. DHEG collaborators: Dennis Petrie, Shaolin Wang & Fu-min Tseng - funded by the Scottish Government.)
• Effective Feedback to Improve Primary Care Prescribing Safety (EFIPPS): a randomised controlled trial using ePrescribing data (with Guthrie B, Bennie M, Robertson C, Ritchie L, Treweek S. DHEG collaborators: Dennis Petrie - funded by the CSO, £ 224,512.)
