The University of Dundee has a reputation as a centre for research excellence and is recognised as "one of the finest institutions in Britain where researchers routinely push back the boundaries of knowledge and teachers inspire their charges" (Sunday Times Good University Guide, 2008). In Economic Studies we share this drive for research excellence. We are a founding member of the Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics.
More recently, we took a leading role in the establishment of the Scottish Institute for Research in Economics which pools key areas of strength within the Scottish Economics research base in three thematic programmes: Behaviour, Incentives and Contracts, Work and Well-being, Macroeconomics, Financial Linkages and the Regions. Our staff are active in all three programmes of SIRE and our colleague Prof Martin Chalkley is the Director of the Work and Well-Being programme. We have also recently established our own Dundee Health Economics Group.
We have a reputation for research excellence in the fields of Health Economics, International Trade, Labour Economics, Welfare Economics and Macroeconomics. Projects currently being developed by our staff include:
Staff have a track record of engagement with stakeholders in the public sector. The quality of applied research we undertake has been used by both the Scottish and UK governments in the formulation of policy, and our staff regularly contribute to the academic debate within economics and in the broader society. Our Knowledge Transfer activities also include collaborations with the private sector.
In the recent Research Assessment Exercise 95% of our research activity was deemed to be of an "International Standard" - and almost 50% was classified as either "Internationally Excellent" or above.
The research we do informs the teaching we deliver, teaching that was awarded the highest possible grading by the Quality Assurance Agency.
