The SIRE Young Researchers' Forum took place at the University of Dundee on the 4th November 2009. Participants came from the Universities of St Andrews, Aberdeen, Stirling, Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier, Heriot-Watt and Glasgow.
Professor Sascha Becker (University of Stirling) kicked the proceedings off with a presentation which looked at whether higher provincial education levels in the 1800's led to faster industrialization in parts of Prussia. Professor Andrew Street (Centre for Health Economics, University of York) then explained the difficulties involved when trying to construct indices for health sector inputs and outputs to measure changes in NHS productivity and went on to explain the current methods used and the latest results for England. Lastly, Dr Yin Zhang (University of Dundee) looked at ways to measure multi-dimensional aspects of poverty and applied the method to data from China. All three talks provoked discussion among the audience which continued over dinner in the evening. The next SIRE Young Researchers' Forum will take place at Dundee on the 2nd December 2009.
