Biography

Peter Richardson is a filmmaker and researcher based in Dundee and London. After graduating form Goldsmiths College in 1989, Peter spent 14 years in the film industry. He has exhibited video works at The Barbican London, City Racing Gallery London and Marian Goodman Gallery New York. His experimental films have been screened on television and at film festivals worldwide including: ’Out Takes’ Brazil, New York, Los Angeles, Cannes, Cork, London and Hamburg film festivals and The National Review Of Live Art The Tramway Glasgow. Peter is currently Director of the Visual Effects Research Lab (VERL) A European Union funded project that undertakes transdiscaplinary research into high-resolution image technologies.

North Sea Screen Partnership (NSSP) / Visual Effects Research Lab (VERL)

Funded by the North Sea Region IVB Programme of the European Union. Description: Established the VERL which links the worlds of Business, Science, Medicine and Art to undertake research into new forms of digital image making. Lead a team of international researchers, SME’s and Government Agencies based in five European countries. 

World Class Visual Effects For Artists

Description: VERL and Creative Scotland commissioned four Scottish based artists to develop new innovative digital films. VERL researchers and Masters students filmed the projects and created four visual effects laden 5minute films which will be screened across the Europe at various venues during 2012.

The Genome Scroller

Description: Bringing together publicly available data from multiple branches of biology, GenomeScroller is centered on displaying our whole genome, letter-by-letter in an on line and physical installation. GenomeScroller shows that, although the genome is ‘complete’, there are only islands of knowledge - where we have much biological and medical knowledge - within the genomic sea.

Description: Four commissioned films designed to highlight new research and methodologies from VERL. A European multi agency project, the films were selected by a public call and are due to be completed in mid 2012. Dissemination is via screenings, conferences and festivals across Europe and North America.

Description: Commissioned to produce a feasibility study into the potential application of stereoscopic 3D filming techniques as a potential means to train surgeons and medical students.
