Biography
A former print- and web-based graphic designer who now teaches and writes on issues related to popular culture, the media, graphic design and higher education. Part of the first generation of graphic designers who gave up cow gum for Macs (at least for, er, non-recreational purposes), Jonathan helped to develop one of the first major in-house design departments to use the now ubiquitous technology.
In a glamorous career that has seen him revolutionising the design of marketing materials for, among other things, urinals, mixer taps, thermostatic radiator valves and plastic guttering, Jonathan has somehow managed not to lose his sense of humour, or ability to ask difficult questions about long-held beliefs on visual culture and education. He can also tell you more than you ever needed (or wanted) to know about the contents of your bathroom - which is probably why he never gets invited round for dinner much anymore.
Jonathan teaches on the Design Studies and MDes programmes and is often invited to speak on design and visual culture. He co-wrote the award winning book Visual Communication: From Theory to Practice.
