Biography

Jeanette has been Head of Learning & Teaching for Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design at the University of Dundee since 2010, prior to which she was DJCAD Head of Postgraduate Studies (2007 - 2010). Jeanette is a Chartered Architect and worked in architectural practices in Edinburgh and Perth prior to joining the University of Dundee. Jeanette has been a Director of WASPS (Workshop and Artists Studio Provision in Scotland) since 1998, and Vice Chair since 2010.

Jeanette’s current role includes direction of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and she also teaches both undergraduate and Masters students. She is a Supervisor for PhD students.

Jeanette’s research investigates how design can impact on the physical and psychological wellbeing of the users of built environments. Research has focussed on the area of workplace environment, healthcare environment with particular emphasis on healthcare staff and environment for people with visual disability. She has been a member of the scientific committee for the bi-annual conference of the International Academy of Design & Health and is a reviewer for The Design Journal.

Jeanette’s research includes an investigation into UK maternity units to establish the effects of the environment on the users, funded by NHS Estates. A similar study assessed how design impacts on operating theatre suites, to identify the benefits of improving efficiency through design. Workplace environment for healthcare staff was a particular interest in both these research projects. Currently research is examining how people with visual impairment wayfind in buildings.

Research content: The paper describes a nationwide study of the design of maternity facilities in the UK. The research seeks to establish to what extent environment affects the performance and satisfaction of maternity unit staff and how this impacts on patient wellbeing. The hypothesis is that there is a strong correlation between staff and patient satisfaction levels.

Research content:  Examines the role of physical and psychological privacy in the office and work environment and its effect of office workers. Includes recommendations for workplace designers and office managers.
